Poverty Immersion Experience
A team of people including staff members and Soup Of Success graduates has developed a half-day event which we offer to the community. Our “Poverty Immersion Experience” is an interactive, intensive workshop where participants:
- Personal testimonies by Soup Of Success graduates about their own struggles with poverty
- Statistics and activities illustrating the problem of poverty and the rich/poor gap both locally and nationally
- A role play experience in which participants became “clients” seeking help with basic needs from various agencies
- Bridges Out of Poverty/Getting Ahead material/activities including–mental models of life in poverty and middle class, personal resources needed for stability, hidden rules of economic class, assessment of community resources
- Brainstorming about opportunities and solutions in our community
Participants in these educational experiences have told us they have been deeply affected and personally changed by the stories they heard and the activities they did with us. They see poverty and the people who struggle with it differently—which leads them to see themselves, and the possibilities for change in their community, differently. May these changes lead to community collaboration and action which ensures the opportunity for economic security for all.
